Simple Shifts: Sit Safe
Jun 02, 2025I noticed something that comes naturally to me today with a few of my kids. I frequently say “sit safe”. We all know those kids—the ones who rock so far back that it seems they're daring gravity to take them out. Instead of instructing them to "sit still" on chairs that sometimes double as rockers (even when they are definitely NOT meant to rock), try this simple shift: tell them to "sit safe." Kids move due to sensory needs or underdeveloped core strength—not because they're plotting to wreck your favorite chair.
When a child rocks too far back, climbs on the chair, or wiggles side to side, it’s their brain and body working to regulate in response to the demands placed on them. Trying to eliminate every bit of movement is unrealistic and, frankly, a bit unfair. Instead, experiment with safe sitting alternatives where controlled movement becomes a natural part of learning.
The key is defining expectations. Have a collaborative conversation with the child about what "safe sitting" means in each context. Is it a specific posture on a classroom chair, or a different position at the dinner table? Do all four legs need to be on the floor for that chair to be considered safe (this is usually a YES!) Would a wiggle seat or foot band help? By defining safe sitting for each situation, you empower the child and tailor solutions to real-world needs. Later, when that impulse to rock wins out (it will; more often than us adults would like), gently cue them to “sit safe.”
